Debt Reduction and Credit Counseling

debt_relief1It is not unusual to find more and more consumers unable to pay more than the minimum due on their credit card bills. For some, that minimum payment is even too much for them to handle and they find themselves in over their head in debt. People continue to spend more than they make and with their paycheck remaining the same, they fall behind in payments.

Many people think that bankruptcy is their answer but today there are alternatives.  Even if you are behind with thousands of dollars owed to banks and card companies, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  You can go the route of debt reduction programs or take a credit counseling program. Each one has its own issues and they are only slightly similar.

Generally, a counseling program will ask you to close all of your credit account and is a longer process than debt reduction. The counseling route will last for about five years where debt reduction will be over in less than one year. Reduced payments is the cost saving of the debt reduction and debt reduction programs can be negotiated so you, the consumer, will only pay a portion of what you owe.
